Lea Rekow

Lea Rekow is currently conducting research in Brasil, where she has co-founded Rocinha Media School for at-risk youth in the Rocinha favela of Rio de Janeiro. Lea is active in media-making, curating, arts consulting, publishing and filmmaking. She was previously Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico and founder of Gigantic ArtSpace in New York City. Lea is an advisor to the Art and Technology graduate program and the Center for Integrated Media at CalArts, an associate of Lalutta Media Collective, a member of the Institute for Australian Geographers, and a member of New York Women in Film and Television. She has produced numerous social and environmental justice projects, the most recent of which include a project on resource extraction (coal and uranium) on Navajo Nation, a study of chemical toxicity in Utah state, and a documentary based on the continuing civil war in Burma. In the past, Lea has performed with media-activist group Emergency Broadcast Network, and produced several publications, including DRIFT with Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. Lea is currently a Research Fellow with the Center for Art and Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art. She is also completing her doctorate with Griffith University, through the support of an Australian Post Graduate Award.
